Community Review for Gimp
My Take
It's a free tool with many capabilities that helps students to express themselves through artwork. Kids found that the software was very interesting to work with and inspired them to move way beyond the material (step by step guide) that was provided to them.
How I Use It
We used it on teaching the movements of Pop Art, Surrealism and Pictorialism in photography. We used presentations to introduce art movements to the class and working sheets which contained step by step guides for the creation of a project on GIMP. Afterwards the students created their own artwork using the knowledge gained by the tutorial and their creativity.

Great Free alternative to PS
While Gimp has a steep learning curve, it offers students a great free PS alternative they can even use at home. If kids do not have access to adobe application, Gimp is a great alternative and can encourage students to create more photography projects at home without the need for the computer lab.

Wonderful tool for image editing and creation on a budget.
Many online tutorials available, and very advanced editing and creation tools are built in. Since not web based, the program needs downloaded and installed before it is functional. Takes a while to load, but waiting for it to start is the only cost.
