My Take
Many online tutorials available, and very advanced editing and creation tools are built in. Since not web based, the program needs downloaded and installed before it is functional. Takes a while to load, but waiting for it to start is the only cost.
How I Use It
This is installed as a 'photoshop clone' on our windows machines. Is able to work with and export to many graphic types. Layers are supported. I have not found anything that I do in high priced editing programs that this program can't do as well.

Great Free alternative to PS
While Gimp has a steep learning curve, it offers students a great free PS alternative they can even use at home. If kids do not have access to adobe application, Gimp is a great alternative and can encourage students to create more photography projects at home without the need for the computer lab.

Great Open Source tool which is similar to Adobe Photoshop with many plugins to expand its capabilities.
It's a free tool with many capabilities that helps students to express themselves through artwork. Kids found that the software was very interesting to work with and inspired them to move way beyond the material (step by step guide) that was provided to them.
