My Take
I really enjoyed using this app. I like the interest it generates, the differentiation, and conversations it starts. At a glance, I could see which of my students were at a 1st grade level and which were at a 5th grade level. It created a challenge for the high-ability students. The students at the lower end had trouble understanding the videos, but most of these students need hands on instruction with a live teacher. I'd say about 90% of the class were able to access and understand the app.
How I Use It
This app breaks math into the 5 common core math topics (fractions, numbers in base ten, geometry, algebraic thinking, measurement and data). Students first take a pretest in each area to determine their ability level. Once this is determined, students work on math problems at their level. If they miss a question, a video pops up to teach them the concept (most students need to be taught not to automatically close the pop up). Also, the app gives the student three names of other students in the class that have mastered that concept and can explain it. I use this app 3-5 times a week for 20-30 minutes. It's differentiated, self directed, and generates interest in the students. I buy each student ear buds ($1 a piece on dollar tree) and a stylus. I have a bunch of extras on hand as replacements. The app also gives me data. I can see when a group of students is stuck on a certain concept, and i can meet with them to go over it.
