Great place to find images to set the stage for a novel
Community Review for Digital Public Library of America
My Take
This is a great place to look for resources to help students understand the context of fiction. Students can find images and texts that will give them historical perspective as well as help them imagine the time period during which the text was published and /or set.
How I Use It
I used this resource when my students were studying The Great Gatsby. I wanted them to get a sense of what Prohibition was like in the United States and how it had affected various groups so they could understan Gatsby's role in the community of West Egg. I wanted students to tap in to their own curiosity and research aspects of this historical period as they connected to the novel. Students were able to do work at whatever level best suited their abilities and then use the resources they found to present to their small groups and to the class. They then shared links to the resources so other students could follow up their research if they wanted to. They didn't need very much explanation of the resource when I introduced the project. They were able to explore and find valuable information.
