Community Review for Dance Mat Typing
My Take
Dance Mat Typing is keyboarding program from the BBC. There is no setup at all required. Students simply choose a level and practice. There is plenty of support provided that encouraged students to learn proper fingering technique.
How I Use It
Second graders are using Dance Mat Typing at my school in weekly 20 minute sessions. We are now approaching our third month of this practice and I can see lots of actual improvement in keyboarding skills. At the start of the year, I wondered if second grade was too soon to begin keyboarding instruction, but I am now convinced that it is the perfect beginning point since poor habits have not yet developed. I have been encouraging students to stay at the first level and not go on until they feel that they have achieved mastery. The program allows students to freely go to any level, but I would not advise this for beginning keyboarders.
