My Take

I think that Code.org is a great tool for teaching computer coding/programming to elementary students. The students are very engaged. It helps them develop problem solving and critical thinking skills because they do not always get the puzzle correct, and have to figure out how to solve the problem.

How I Use It

All students 2nd-5th at my school have used Code.org during the Hour of Code. It serves as a great intro to coding. Each year, there are more and more activities on the website. The media tie-ins (Star Wars, Angry Birds, Minecraft, and many more) draw the kids to the activities. Students can filter by age and coding experience to find activities that meet their level. With headphones, students can listen to video instructions on some of the beginner level activities.

Our after-school Tech Club members were all given accounts at Code.org and were assigned the twenty module course to learn coding more in-depth. The modules start at beginning basic level and add more coding content as students progress. The students became very proficient at block programming after completing the course. The teacher could see how students were progressing on the teacher page.

The best of the best for early coding!

Code.org is an incredible teaching tool. I love how accessible it is for both teachers and students, even those who are brand new to coding. The lessons are engaging, interactive, and designed to be fun, which helps keep students motivated. I also appreciate the wide range of resources and support for educators

beginner friendly good for practicing basic concepts

I think overall this is a relatively good tool to use to begin practicing basic concepts to learn coding. I don't think it is very good for very intermediate level concepts like learning functions or classes but it's very good for learning the basics like variables, loops, lists and so on. I like how there are multiple different types of game related concepts especially familiar ones like Minecraft it makes it more engaging for younger audiences. I do wish that some of the tasks and games would have better performance but I understand that can be very difficult to implement for a multifaceted web design like this. Overall I think it's really great and should definingly be tried to teach beginners

Digital Literacy for the Youth

Code.org revolutionizes computer science education by making programming both accessible and engaging.
