My Take

Overall, Code.org is a great resource and starting point for teaching coding to elementary students. The website is easy to access and assign courses to students. However, confidentiality may be a concern in that students names are used to set up classes in order to assign courses. Also, the latest Beta versions of Star Wars and Minecraft have several bugs and seem to promote Disney products and suggest coding is all about building games.

How I Use It

This site is great for helping develop a coding curriculum for students from primary to secondary levels. Several courses and lesson plans are already developed and easy to access. I used this with 2-5th grade students and assigned courses and did several unplugged activities. Students were highly engaged and able to complete several of the activities. However, some students skip over the instructional videos and hints which then causes them to struggle with the concepts. As a way to introduce coding and get kids excited about writing basic LOGO script, then this is a perfect place to start.
