My Take

Each year my students absolutely LOVE Annie and Mobie! They dance and clap as the video begins to play and then their eyes are gravitated to the screen. I've found this app and the videos available to be a wonderful introduction to my lessons. While there are quite a few free videos most require you to purchase annually and it is a bit pricey. I recommend browsing over the concepts to see if they will apply to you but the great thing about Brain Pop Jr. (especially at the first grade level) is that there are so many videos that are applicable to what I am teaching.

How I Use It

I use BrainPop Jr. to introduce new concepts. Usually I present it whole group but the ease of navigating the site can make it adaptable to individual use as well. The videos are entertaining and easy for my first graders to follow. The students are very engaged while watching these educational videos. There are also other activities to go along with each video. You can find lesson ideas for extended learning, games/activities, and quizzes, however these do vary in quality. My students usually like to take the quizzes after each video watched and want to "show me what they've learned". We will sometimes complete the "write about it" activity together too.
