Well documented curriculum reinforces algebra concepts & teaches programming at the same time
This is a great tool that comes with a well documented curriculum. It requires NO previous knowledge of computer programming. There is a student workbook, an instructor copy of the workbook with answers to the exercises and additional worksheets with answers are also provided. However, some of the answer keys are missing. There is a fairly active user forum which is closely monitored by Dr. Emmanuel Schnauzer, one of the creators of Bootstrap. They also offer professional development workshops throughout the country where educators can share how they are using the tool. The best part about the tool is that it is FREE. You can order the student workbooks from the website, or you can download the PDF file and print them out yourself.
How I Use It
I have been using Bootstrap in my Computer Science 1 class, which is made up of mostly high school freshman with little or no programming experience. I have been following the well documented curriculum for the 1st quarter. The learning abilities of my students have made it necessary for me to develop lots of extra demonstrations, practice and assessments, but this is not the "fault" of the tool. There are embedded demonstration lessons, worksheets and extra exercises. I have been focusing less on the mathematical concepts and more on the logic and syntax requirements, since I am teaching computer science. My students have Google Apps for Education accounts, which the website (wescheme.org) uses to log them in and save their programs from one session to another and to share their completed work with me.
