My Take

I have always loved the students' creativity and ability to use this tool's imagination. I would give them general guidelines, and they created fabulous stories. I liked the ability to use your pictures and online resources. Some of my students had dexterity issues, so drawing was not happening, or they did not have a lot of pictures. So, the online was fantastic. At first, it was challenging to learn to move items and get the hang of the text, but as a class, we figured it out and decided to make directions. Also, learning how to publish was tricky, but that was trial and error.

How I Use It

I have used Book Creator with my 6th -8th-grade students. I teach three different subjects technically- Digital Citenzeship, Google Work Suite, and Media Literacy and Design. At each level, I can have my students working in Book Creator, either taking a scenario or creating a comic page for the extension activity. In my 7th grade, they make an IF-Then Adventure story, learning how to embed sites into pages. At the same time, the 8th grade is creating a story to tell about a topic in the news and how you might discuss it with others in a story format. As they now have the newspaper format that lends itself to another great way for students to create ways to communicate about our topics. We also made covers as if they were for films or just book jackets on current events and had them around the school so that we could hear what others were thinking about it. So, for formative and summative assessment, this is a solid and fantastic way to engage your students with your content.
