Newsela is a great way to get my whole resource reading class involved.
I love this tool. My students often feel self-conscious because they are slower readers. Newsela helps them to build confidence because I can give them a reading that is on their reading level. I enjoy choosing articles that are current and applicable to their lives. I love watching them get involved and discuss what they have read!

Modifications Made Easy
If you teach any subject where students are evaluated on non-fiction reading and have many different learning levels, Newsela is a great resource. Because of the berth of articles and the adjustable lexile levels for everyone from those who struggle to those who excel, Newsela makes planning and accommodating a much more manageable task.

Great tool to build literacy skills
I think this teaching tool is a great way to help students utilize the literacy skills they have been taught and practice those skills to become better readers while deepening their knowledge on content area subject matter. I like that students are able to change the reading level to build their confidence while also challenging them to become better readers. I utilize Newsela to supplement the lessons that I teach to help students gain a deeper understanding while providing students the opportunity to make real world connections with the content we are covering in class.

Amazing resource for both students and educators!
This is a fantastic tool that all teachers should explore and utilize. The adjustable lexile level tool makes any article appropriate for each student. This is a huge benefit for classrooms that have advanced learners, grade level learners, below grade level readers, ELL students, and students with special needs.

This is a great resource, but the opinion pieces should always have both sides of the issues so that the students can judge for themselves. We are nurturing independent thinkers, so they should not be "fed" only the opinions that liberal newsela wants.
I have a problem with the very left leaning opinion pieces, though. I almost never can find a counter-opinion to present to the class. We want to teach the students to think for themselves..... Not regurgitate one sided articles. Newsela should only publish opinions in an even handed fashion. Teachers need both sides to present to the students!

Great idea, poorly executed because of political bias
I wish I could give Newsela 5 stars because it is a great tool. However, it is extremely left-leaning with news and sometimes I have to dig for unbiased articles for my students because I don't believe in pushing a political agenda on them.

Great lexile-levelled articles
For over five years, this has been my go-to source for nonfiction articles. They've been adding text sets and primary and secondary sources across a wide range of topics. Newsela is a fabulous tool to connect classrooms with current events and challenging texts.

Current event for all reading levels
I found Newsela very helpful as a teaching tool. I loved the fact that you can join and use many features for free. It allowed me to differentiate the reading while still maintaining the content to allow all of my students to participate in class discussions. I also appreciate the range of topics, not just current events but also art, history, etc. Keeping in mind that not all students have access to computers at home, it is equally helpful that you can have students read the articles and take the quizzes online or be able to print the articles. One of my only frustrations I had was finding the same article multiple times using the search feature. There were times when I found an article, printed it out, then tried to go back at a later date to search for the article with no success. Eventually I did find them but only after trying multiple filters. Overall I find this a great teaching tool.
