Fun and Functional!
The manipulatives and graphics are great, especially since the math program used does not have visual models. Leading students through each manipulative before having to use it is helpful as well.

My students love it. They like the choice in activities and I like giving assignments for specific standards.

Great for some special education students
It's powerful for customizing instruction to where the child has gaps or has strengths (and can work ahead of the group). The kids really like it. I like that they can "earn points" but the "My Stuff" section is actually very small and limited to what they can buy on (songs, background image, a border around their avatar). Great program for early finishers.
I like that it is challenging but not so hard that they feel they can't do it. I can appreciate a program that is fun for students but also easy and meaningful to teachers.

Self-Assessing Customized Math Reinforcement
I would use DreamBox mostly to reinforce what has already been taught in my classroom. Students could work independently on concepts already taught. I do wish that DreamBox offered more instructional mini-lessons prior to asking students to complete a task. Currently, students are shown a sort of demonstration of a math tool or of the concept with one or two examples, then asked to complete the task independently, using mental math. The fact that DreamBox is a mental math-based program can be difficult for some learners who may still require additional written practice and/or manipulatives. It is helpful to build math fluency.
