Thin line between love and hate.
This is not a teaching tool for secondary school. My students love it because of the games, but learn nothing. It is not something I recommend as an instructional tool. If I use it, it is because they ask for it and I need something that will keep them engaged and quiet for a sub.

Games Not Math
This is not a teaching tool; it is a game that could be played at recess. The organization of the site is confusing and not student friendly. There are ads before every game that could lead to misclicks and lead them astray from the games.

When in doubt, THROW IT OUT!
I would stay away from this site. It asks students to log-in and has multiple opportunities for mis-clicks which download adware and malware to the students devices. There are better sites available like physics.com that have all of the pro's of coolmath.com without the adware and malware. It's an IT educator's nightmare.

Virus Central - Computer Crash
DO NOT LET STUDENTS USE THIS WEBSITE!
Coolmath is an old website filled with malware and spyware. Students previously used this website on the school equipment and it caused 70 laptops to crash. Equipment invested with viruses must be completely wiped and reformatted. After multiple hours of work, the computers were still left with lagging issues and permanent damage.
In addition to a one way ticket to DIIT, your students will likely treat the site as a joke and retain very little, if any, mathematical content. The only reason students enjoy this website is because they see it as a game and a waste of class time.

Not enough math content.
I would not recommend this site as a teaching tool. Too many issues with this site.

CoolMath as a resource, CoolMathGames as practice.
I would give this site 5 stars as a student who wants to play games and not realize they are learning and using my skills in mathematics. However, from a teaching perspective I must demote the site by one as some of the games are not as mathematics learning oriented as I would like them to be. I would like to point out the two different sides of this site; CoolMath.com and CoolMathgames.com. There is a great difference between the two CoolMath.com has lessons on different levels of mathematics, example problems, a math dictionary, plenty of images, and more. I think this site has more to offer than its reputation lets us believe.
For the sister site CoolMathgames.com students can use skills they have learned in their education; problem solving, critical thinking, area, rotation, direction, analyze, draw connections. Some games may not seem useful, but they are testing the student’s abilities to think critically, analyze the situation quickly, plan, and solve problems. For example, Pool Geometry is based around angles and problem solving. In what direction should the player shoot the cue ball to hit another ball into a pocket. Students must break down what angles are possible and after each ball is hit how are they going to move.

Hardly any math. Arcade type games. Too many ads (not always age appropriate).
It's not a teaching tool that I would use. There are so many actual math only apps available with NO ads, I use those instead.

Basic arcade style games with little to no math connections.
This is not a useful tool. Kids love it but there is not enough thinking or math involved to call it "math games".

Neither Cool nor Math
Do not allow your students to use CoolMath for anything other than a mindless romp. This site is also full of video ads that will slow down your schools network. Stay away!

Dated & Questionable
The engagement is good on this site because exceedingly few of the games on this site are anything but entertainment. There is little to redeem it instructionally and there are tons of free and low cost alternatives that have actual pedagogical use.
