Pros: Quick access to fascinating and useful information about 200 animals.

Cons: No way to share research notes.

Bottom Line: Rich animal resource has lots of science, research, and writing applications.

Use World Book's World of Animals as an independent research station where kids can explore and learn about animals on their own. Teachers also can use the animal comparisons to demonstrate comparing and contrasting and then extend the lesson into a writing prompt in which kids flesh out a comparison chart to paragraph form. Use the app to teach common names and scientific classifications of animals in science. The video clips and images make great science resources as well as writing prompts. World of Animals is an engaging, easy-to-use resource for teaching research skills -- from taking notes to documenting sources.

World Book's World of Animals is an excellent tool for research and exploration. Kids learn facts about many different animals, including their common and scientific names, type (mammal, reptile, etc.), size, number of newborn, lifespan, diet, and habitat. Vivid images and video enhance kids' understanding, and some entries even include the animal's sound. Each animal page has a short encyclopedia entry further describing it and a fun fact as well as the option to chose another animal from the encyclopedia to compare it to. This rich multimedia experience will give kids a deep understanding of the animals they study, and teachers can incorporate the app into the classroom to teach research skills. Kids are empowered to choose an animal of interest from among the 200 animals included, and the sounds, images, and videos will keep them engaged.
