Great way to have your students use their subject related vocabulary
Community Review for Word Mover
My Take
ReadWriteThink.org’s Word Mover app is a great tool to review concepts taught in class.
Students can create “found poetry” by choosing from word banks and existing famous works such as the "I Have A Dream" speech and some Shakespeare works. Advanced learners can write more complex poems with more advanced vocabulary. I wish the app allowed students to create their own background art work.
How I Use It
I use this app as a review of Social Studies units. For example, for a lesson focused on Martin Luther King, students watched a video of the "I Have A Dream" speech that I displayed using my projector. Then, they used the portion of the speech that is included in the word bank in Word Mover to create a poem using some of the words pulled from the speech itself. I challenge my advanced learners to create "tiles" that are synonyms of some of the words, such as liberty instead of freedom. After students share their poem with their table partner, they make revisions. When complete, the poems are projected on the screen and read aloud by the students. This activity is beneficial especially for ELLs who need practice in their speaking skills.
