My Take

The photography is great, but if you don't already understand that the poverty line numbers represent the amount people can use on food for a day it is confusing. I use this in an unstructured way. I let the students investigate and converse on their own, stepping in when I hear something that connects to the book. It would be hard to create an organized assignment with the site.

How I Use It

I teach the book 'The Street' which highlights the struggle of a single mom trying to make it in Harlem in the 1940s. I love using information that allows my students to understand the theme of poverty for the book and connect to their life today. The Poverty Line stimulates my students to discuss the reality of food for them and for the characters in the book. I use this site in conjunction with the site, PlaySpent.
