My Take

Even though it took me a little bit of time to figure out how to set it up and use it, I am firmly and likely forever Team Poll Everywhere. I prefer using the open-ended option, but I require that students start responses with their names so that I can go to a student who reveals a misunderstanding and reteach. Because all of their responses are saved on the right side of the screen, I can point to their work and discuss elements. Even though I wish I could customize the live poll view for my students a bit more, this is in no way enough of an issue to dissuade me from using this product.

How I Use It

I use this in my teaching for two primary reasons: to quickly check for understanding or to quickly gather data on student opinions. I can plan out questions for a lesson and type them into Poll Everywhere. I often use multiple choice to review a concept and open ended to ask kids to apply a concept. What works well is the quick feedback. I love that with a multiple choice question I can see how many choose each selection. I can easily see which answer distracted students and instruct on the spot. Unfortunately, Poll Everywhere is anonymous. But I require that students type their names before starting their answers, so I can provided feedback for students on their open ended responses. I love asking students at the end of the lesson to rate their understanding. If you craft your questions well, it can be an amazing tool in the classroom.
