Nutrition 101 is good for higher level students .
Community Review for Nutrition 101
My Take
Nutrition 101 is an advanced program for many inner city students, struggling readers and ELL. Children found it difficult to read such a great deal of text without interaction or interesting check points. I liked the fact that all chapters provided vocabulary definitions through flashcard reviews. This is a great piece as it fosters studying habits and stamina in our middle school students. Nutrition 101 could better serve students by making it more stimulating for use. This seemed to function more at a late high school / early college level. In addition, more diagrams and graphics are needed with captions in order to disperse the text content.
How I Use It
I planned on using this for a research healthy living unit the school library does. I intended for students to work in small groups and collaborate. However, many children had difficulty reading by themselves for the required time and Nutrition 101 is geared more towards independent use. While the ending quizzes are beneficial, today's students are accustomed to more interaction and immediate gratification, which this app does not provide. In addition, since available platforms are limited to Kindle and Android and not Apple friendly, many students were not as receptive or did not have compatible devices. I found that this was more suitable to higher function students that are able to read independently for sustained periods of time.
