My Take
Although the initial classroom set-up can be time consuming, the overall instructional benefits of Newsela are really worth the effort. The availability of high quality, well referenced news articles at different reading levels is an amazing resource. Once your students start using Newsela, it becomes a normal part of the daily routine, like reading the morning paper. Students like the articles, topics, and photographs included with each article. They also like the comprehension quizzes at the end of the articles.
How I Use It
Newsela has thousands of current articles on every topic under the sun, and even a few about the sun! The same article is available at several Lexile levels, giving every reader in your class the opportunity to learn new information in their zone of proximal development. Many articles also include comprehension quizzes that can be taken by students after reading the articles.
Newsela allows teachers to set up classroom rosters and assign articles for students to read. Quiz results from assigned articles are also reported to the classroom teacher. This is a quick and easy way for teachers to provide self-paced learning opportunities for their students while progressing on thematic units of study. This is an ideal resource for third through twelfth grade classrooms.
The team at Newsela recently added a great new "Text Set" feature, enabling teachers to sort and group articles on a similar topic, event, or person. These text sets can then be assigned to students to use as multiple sources of informational text on the same subject. This feature really helps teachers meet the English Language Arts requirements of Common Core State Standards.
