My Take

I like using this for my students that are struggling with number sense and identification. I like how much of the app is voiced over so students do not need to know how to read in order to be successful with the app. I don't like that students have the option to "play" a game after every correct answer. I would prefer that they have to work towards a reward. I could foresee some students doing more playing than working. With close monitoring and specific instructions I could see this being a very helpful app for students that are struggling with number sense.

How I Use It

I used this product in small groups. It has been good for reteaching as well as helping some of my struggling learners. It is a very basic program so students were able to work on their number sense and number formation. It does allow for larger numbers (up to 999) so it can help some advanced learners as well.

Interactive Counting App that Encourages Early Numeracy or Supports Students Needing Intervention in Numeracy Skills

Overall, I think this is a great app to have on a toddler's iPad for allowing him/her to freely explore. To say it would be appropriate for a school to purchase for student iPads might be a stretch too far. The teacher would need to adjust settings to meet needs of individual students and keeping them adjusted might be asking a bit too much. Having a single iPad in a center with settings made for reinforcing skills might be a good option, though. I did like the option of changing the graphics for the counting activities...wooden blocks are the initial graphic, but the user can change the counters to be flowers, cars, jewels, balls or cupcakes. The free play "Building Game" would also be attractive to children as a reward, but it seemed a little poorly designed that the children could get to the settings menu from inside each activity without having to enter a passcode or solve a problem. So if the parent or teacher tried to adjust the game settings to only come on after a set number of quizzes and to only last a portion of the time, the child could change the settings back fairly easily. One other weakness to point out is that the audio support for this app is only available in English (American, British or Australian).
