My Take

Vocabulary development is crucial in any content area. Since I teach second grade, my students have a huge vocabulary load in mathematics, particularly geometry. It's great to have a tool to help with vocabulary development and review, especially one of quality with mathematical accuracy. As stand-alone practice, the engagement piece is weaker than one might like. However, for the purpose of instructional support (it is part of the Bridges 2 math program, but it will work with any program), the Math Vocabulary Cards app by Math Learning Center is a solid teaching tool.

How I Use It

Math Vocabulary Cards app by Math Learning Center helps students deepen their conceptual understanding of key terms in mathematics. Each card is divided into three parts: the math term, a model or representation of the term, and the definition. Each section can been hidden or revealed, which means students can practice in a variety of ways. Oftentimes my second and third grade students practice by having the model and definition revealed, and then they try to name the term. One great use of this app is to project it and use it to introduce vocabulary to the class. I reveal the model and discuss the attributes or concepts shown. Then I reveal the definition, which we read together. Finally, I add the term. This supports the learning of visual and auditory learners well. One additional feature of the app is that it is written in Spanish. A simple tap on the toggle will flip between languages. This is a bonus for dual language classes or for teachers who are supporting Spanish-speaking ELL students with making the language transition with academic vocabulary. The Math Vocabulary Cards app allows you to easily select the cards shown, either by topic, grade span, or selecting individually.
