My Take

TranStar gives great visual support to students who are learning or reviewing translations, reflections, rotations and enlargements. They direct moves of shapes to guide TranStar to its new home through sectors of the galaxy. There are objects that help/hinder progress. Two great supports: students are guided through practice rounds as they learn to use/avoid these objects; there are explanations with graphics which explain the concepts if needed. Students get several chances to guide the shapes correctly; this trial and error approach can really help them learn how the transformations work.

How I Use It

I offer these games as choices. My students figured out strategies quickly and shared with peers. They loved challenging students from other schools as well as having friendly competitions among themselves. Players receive points, are ranked and can earn badges.
