My Take

This website makes the learning accessible to more students. It removes some of the barriers they face with learning when they are frustrated by not knowing what a word means. I used this website many times while teaching Spanish to middle school students. No account is necessarily, you just paste a URL to Lingro, and it makes the website clickable. After clicking on the word it will automatically define it. There are additional languages besides the Spanish-English dictionary, including French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Swedish, Russian, and Chinese. Another feature is the English dictionary. This will just provide the definition of the word. I have used this while teaching Social Studies when current event articles are slightly beyond the comprehension level of the students.

How I Use It

Lingro is an easy website to use to make reading more comprehensible for students. There are only two steps necessary: paste the link to the website and click on words you do not know. A log in is not necessary, but creating a free account will give the user access to additional study tools. This website is perfect in language classrooms or any time students would traditionally need a dictionary. One disadvantage is the user contributed definitions of words. Many times these are redundant and they are not necessarily the definition I want the students learning.
