Great way to continue student engagement and comprehension as an individual lesson tool and whole class game contests.
Community Review for iCivics
My Take
I have really used the resources of iCivics a lot this year because I have a much more diversified group of student learners. I have found it to be a great, authentic educational tool to reach ALL my students and have them self-evaluate the lesson and their application of curriculum material.
I like that students do not need to sign up for the website, even though it does allow for it.
I like how it maintains a video game feel while staying focused on educational needs.
How I Use It
In teaching about the Executive Branch of the United States government, I wanted students to "experience" the job. I also wanted to make a game class leader board since a majority of my students are avid video gamers. I started by assigning "Win the White House," in which students had to try to win the Electoral College and keep the popular vote. I would record their scores and publish for the class to see. Next, I assigned "Executive Command" so that students received an authentic feel for the job of the president. Again scores were recorded and the winners received a prize.
I liked the game simulation and attention to detail it teaches. It is also authentic which is crucial to meeting the educational needs of all students.
I do not have a negative critique at this time.
