Grow a Garden with Gro Garden
Community Review for Gro Garden
My Take
It is definitely a program that you could assign to students for understanding the concept, but I could also see students getting board with it very quickly. I could see it as an add-on activity for the students to play for 10-20 minutes as a pre-lesson or as a lesson support. Once students have made it through the game, the only thing they can do differently on the second round is to try to increase the amount of their harvest, which increases the amount of food available and the amount of recycled materials in the compost pile.
How I Use It
This is a low-level learning activity. It is a great activity to add to a unit on plant life cycles and renewable energy. Not only does it allow students to plant different seeds, but it also requires students to water the seed and provide sunlight to ensure growth and maturity. After each of the plants are harvested, students have the opportunity to feed each of the characters with the harvested veggies. The leftover stems and stalks can then be added to the compost pile.
The game continues in this same cycle providing a continuous opportunity to practice the same concepts over and over using the same mods, characters and concepts.
