My Take

Google Earth can have numerous applications in the classroom. It can easily integrate with social studies units, allowing students to "travel" to different parts of the world and have a first-person look at new sites and landmarks. It can also be used to have students practice math tasks, such as calculating the mileage between different locations or the size of different places and students can use their explorations in Google Earth as the starting point for both fiction and non-fiction stories about different parts of the world.

How I Use It

I have used Google Earth with first grade students on the iPad so that they could travel the seven continents and gain a better understanding of their size and the distance between them. Students also learned about how to read a map and identify different markers or map keys and how to navigate the tool itself. They also had a chance to visit different cities on each continent and explore some of the 3D views of different places around the world.
