My Take

Goodreads is an incredible website and app that puts millions of book ratings and reviews at students' fingertips. As superficial as it seems, I especially love the layout and design of the site- it's clean, colorful and easy to navigate. My students spent the majority of class time during one of our "Tech in the Classroom" days navigating and browsing through the site and the plethora of book reviews available to them. My only critique is that once a star rating is applied, the book's page must be manually refreshed for the "My Review" box to appear. It would be more efficient if the star rating triggered the opening of the "My Review" section.

How I Use It

All my English students are required to read one book for "leisure" each month. At the end of the month, they must complete a book review on Goodreads as a 50 point quiz assignment. Students follow a guideline for the book reviews, but are allowed to enhance their reviews with photos, gifs and other surprises. Many of the students report in their reviews that they have grown to enjoy reading and often look forward to finding other books that might interest them.
