My Take

The classification activity is the best feature of Galaxy Zoo. Students are classifying photographs of real galaxies, teaching critical thinking, categorization, and scientific process. Teachers can view student profiles to monitor progress. Overall, Galaxy Zoo could be a great supplemental activity for a middle or high school science class studying astronomy.

How I Use It

Students participate in classifying different types of galaxies. Galaxies are classified by a series of questions, making the process easy for younger students to navigate. In addition to the classification activity, there is information about the subject of astronomy though a blog, discussion forum, explanation of resources, and research papers. The information pages are text heavy with small font, but are a good supplement to obtain information beyond the activity.
