Dreambox: A Uniquely "Magic" Adaptive Math Learning Engine!
Community Review for DreamBox Learning Math
My Take
I LOVE IT! Dreambox is the only truly adaptive math program I have come across, and I have spent the past couple years constantly searching. They also have amazing customer support and a curricular development team that really listens to teachers' input... each software update directly relates to a relatable challenge in the classroom. I feel that this tool can serve many varied student populations due to its adaptability as well as the minimal usage of words, allowing learners to truly manipulate the visuals to think through the math and not get hung up on separate reading or language challenges.
How I Use It
I have utilized the "magic" adaptive engine of Dreambox to differentiate my learners' math exploration and practice for the past five years. Students have a certain activity # goal each week as part of their blended learning experience, however each activity is specifically tailored to the mathematician along the way, with the overall goal for each learner to "grow at least one academic year" which can vary widely based on individual strand strengths and challenges. There is never any "level" or "grade" shared on the student end. They only receive the feedback "Oops, try again" or "I'll help you out with this one" and then the engine adapts to include a different level of understanding or provides more visual support for the learning experience such as placing an overlay over the visual with numbers, taking out basic facts that are especially tricky for that learner (unless the activity is explicitly assessing fluency of facts), etc. This tool works best for individual learner interaction. There is an easy way to walk a group or class through an activity together from the teacher sign-in, however you won't be able to take advantage of the adaptability unless individuals are inputting their unique thinking into the engine from their login.
