Engaging Support for Common Core Math Concepts
Community Review for DreamBox Learning Math
My Take
Love, love, love DreamBox! It is engaging and supports our Common Core math standards. I, especially, appreciate the number sense skills that are developed in all the grade levels. I'm teaching grades 5-6 special needs students this summer and DreamBox targets these essential number sense skills that my students need. The DreamBox team is also very open to suggestions from teachers and provides teacher support through their Edmodo group.
How I Use It
As an instructional coach in a pre-K through grade 8 school, I've used DreamBox in the computer lab, with iPads, and in teacher-led lessons. Once the students are set-up and given basic instructions, the program takes over in placing them, adjusting their learning path, and encouraging them. Stella, the program's online assistant/avatar, helps the students when needed. This allows students to work more independently with little assistance from an adult. Students are engaged and easily transfer concepts into class lessons. When doing "Number Talks" in grades k-5, students often share that they've seen and/or used the strategy in DreamBox. I've also used the teacher tools for whole group common core math lessons. The teacher tools are activities that are in the student program, but, as teachers, we can pull them out and use to deliver math content that supports our current standard. These tools also have lesson plans to help you get the most out of the activity.
