My Take
If there’s a better adaptive math practice site out there, I haven’t found it!
The student interface is fun and intuitive. It feels like free-play, but it's excellent adaptive learning. And there aren't any links to other sites or in-site cul-de-sacs where students can get lost.
The teacher interface is fantastic. They let you sift the students' data multiple ways: by proficiency, standard, etc.
It’s a reinforcement tool – don’t expect it to teach in your place – but as a practice tool, I don’t know how it could be better.
How I Use It
My school has bought licenses for Dreambox for several years now. In my class, students can use it during their independent stations time. We have a computer station (with several desktop PCs) set up alongside a wall, and when students rotate to that station, there are shortcuts to several learning sites (including Dreambox) on the desktop. Dreambox is right up there with RAZ-kids.com in popularity at this station.
Students can also use it at home. We send home login information towards the beginning of the year and reminders partway through the year. Home use is less consistent across the class, of course, depending on families’ levels of tech access, tech literacy, and household rules about tech use.
