My Take
DreamBox gives students an enjoyable means of learning and reinforcing math concepts at their level. The site offers many incentives for students to work and practice their math. The students can make changes to their accounts to personalize their experience by choosing their music when they log in and changing their avatar. They can earn badges and collect coins to spend on the site. All these features gives students incentives for going on the site. The help feature gives students extra info if they need it. The tutorials explain how to use the specific tools. Overall, this is the way students want to learn and practice.
How I Use It
Since the site is accessible from anywhere with Internet access, I would suggest teachers use this for small groups on classroom computers or as an additional homework. While using it throughout the year would be beneficial, teachers should definitely have students on the site prior to the standardized testing. The various units are easy to find and students could practice specific skills they need to focus on for the tests. Also, fourth graders love contests and reaching specific goals. SInce the data can be tracked easily, teachers could also give their own rewards or prizes for students who achieve a certain level or obtain a number of badges.
