My Take

Brainscape can be valuable for students studying vocabulary-based subject areas in secondary and beyond settings. The drawback is that many of the content areas require in-app purchases. Other than that, I think this app can be very useful.

How I Use It

Brainscape is a digital flashcard app that breaks subjects down into small chunks of information. and then organizes these "chunks" for optimal learning. Students can share their learning with others by sharing a free link. "Confidence-based repetition" is used, in which the student rates his/her own confidence in the answer. The metacognitive addition ( thinking about my own thinking) is what makes this app a bit different than regular "flashcard" apps. In my opinion, this is the best part of this tool.

Although Brainscape is promoted for 5th grade and up, I think it is better suited for high school and college students. Many free subjects are included with the original app download, and most of those are upper level subjects such as Advanced Placement classes and MCAT Chemistry.
