My Take

Overall the graphics are great and really engaged the students. I am not sure that I would use it just as a quiz feature but I did like using it as a starting point for student projects and differentiation. They groups were able to choose the one they wanted with ease. Overall it is a pretty good product but there is not way to monitor results except to have students screen shot the results and email them. Some kind of log-in would be nice.

How I Use It

I used this in Earth Science to assign the students a different geography regions. It was a great way for students to look at geography and science together. I had group of student each take one quiz and create a mini lesson covering the 20 questions it asks so students could take the quiz and pass it. It worked well for students to create and focus in on what their classmates should known.

Easy to use app and while there are categories for the quizzes it is so widespread it would be hard to tie it all with classroom content.

The app gives students immediate feedback on whether they got the answer correct or incorrect. Often times there is a brief explanation as to why and then a link to read for more information. However this does not appear every single time, I would say probably 85% of the time. I like that it is easy to use and that the feedback is immediate and they do not have to wait until they finish the entire quiz to find out if they were right or wrong and why. I do not like that the questions are so varied and there would no way for me to keep track of how my students did on each question because then at least I could only look at the questions that relate to what we are learning in class.

This app poses great trivia questions but lacks curricular connections.

The design is very professional and visually appealing, and the variety of trivia categories is broad. There is even a "Food" category, which piqued my students' interest. It's nice that it is an iPhone / iPad app and is quick to play, so it can be accessed quickly and shut down just as quickly. If my course were more geography-specific, this app would be more relevant for my students; it could be particularly useful to a cultural geography course. The main drawback I see is that there is no option for teachers to customize questions to fit content addressed in class. Additionally, there is no option for teachers to monitor their students' progress. GeoQuiz is similar to Freerice.com, which is a trivia game that also provides a community service, so I'd be inclined to steer my students to that website over Brain Cafe's GeoQuiz. Overall, this is an entertaining trivia game that students can play individually for extra practice or to satisfy their geographical and cultural curiosities.
