My Take

For most of my students, Accelerated Reader was a useful program that helped shape reading instruction in my classroom. However, the quizzes and point goals that are central to the program do not motivate and engage all students; the program would benefit from more variation in quiz format and child-friendly gamification.

How I Use It

I used Accelerated Reader to improve the independent reading skills of my students. As students read and took comprehension quizzes on books within their personalized range, they began to take ownership over their reading practice and habits; I extended this in my classroom by setting up reading portfolios that allowed students to keep track of their progress and reflect upon their reading. AR also offers useful data for teachers that I used to create targeted, small-group lessons for students. There are also options for home-school communication, allowing parents to check up on their child's reading progress.
