Engaging videos and entertaining animations with excellent teacher resources

I love that this is a free tool that students can access on our classroom desktop computers. Math Snacks was created by an interdisciplinary team of researchers, math educators, and mathematicians, so it is backed by research and tested by students in a learning games lab. The result is that the games really are fun and engaging. They are not the usual drill/practice games, but rather dig deeper and present exciting and entertaining problems to solve. The developers encourage the educator to allow students to play and explore and figure out the game in their own way, but they also provide lesson plans for before and after playing to make the most of the learning experience. In the future I will turn to Math Snacks when I’m looking for a way to enhance a topic in my curriculum that matches up with the games/animations that they have to offer. I know the kids will love it. I hope in the future that they will add in a way to track student progress, as well as assessment tools, such as a pre-test and post-test.

Animated Fun and Follow-Up

I think Math Snacks is a good free resource to use in class. I thought the graphics and ideas were a great way to introduce student's to the math concept to be explored. Moreover, activities following the video are excellent in engaging students towards experiential learning. In my opinion, math really makes the most sense when people, children or adults understand its practical, real world effects and applications.

Pedagogically sound games and animations engage students in developing understanding of math concepts!

As an adult, I enjoyed all of these games and animations and I can honestly same the same for my students. I wholeheartedly recommend this site both as a resource and as a teaching tool. They have teaching guides and listed standards for each game and animation, but don't feel restricted to only those which are officially at your grade level, as all activities are scaffolded and at the beginning levels can definitely be used by grade-levels below their official designation.

Great way to introduce students to complex math concepts

The camp turned out to be a huge success! Over the course of the week we were pleased to 35 students gaining a better understanding of coordinate grids, number lines, ratios, and scale factors. Through such activities as Coordinate Grid Basketball, Scaled Catapult Model Building, and Custom Rocket Launch (to measure the height of flight) students displayed a fundamental understanding of all concepts used in the camp while still showing a great deal of involvement in the learning process. From students discussing the concepts of ratios during lunch to how glad they were they had property scaled utensils, every day was a reminder that these kids were picking up a lesson and internalizing it. These weren't kids who came to camp to learn about math and happened to have fun, these were kids that came to camp to have fun and happened to learn, and that is what makes Math Snacks so effective!

Math Snacks are a great way to help students develop conceptual understanding of certain challenging concepts.

The Math Snacks games are great tools for helping teach particular topics that students consistently struggle with. In order to get the most out of the games I recommend using the protocols on mathsnacks.org. The students find the games engaging and seem to develop a better understanding of the math concepts.

Great opportunity to get students hooked.

Math Snacks provides videos, lessons and practice games for students to work with. I used the Rates video about how often someone talked. It was a great intro to the topic and gave us a great jumping-off point for our class discussion. Students love the games, which have been developed with the students interests in mind.

Great idea but not ready yet

The site has high aspirations to help students who struggle with or are turned off by math. They took key concepts and created engaging animations and real world application videos to explain them. However, one of the videos has been taken down by YouTube for copyright violation. And a couple of the games, crash after the first round.
