Wonderful tool to foster global understanding and connections!
Students love exploring on Google Earth. The multiple layers help to build in depth understanding of physical geography. It is also a wonderful tool for building cross curricular connections between the sciences and social sciences.

Great way to see parts of the world students study and discuss
This is an interactive tool I like to use because of the visual presented. This is better than a picture in a book, more realistic obviously.

Great app that allows students to visualize the places they are learning about without actually visiting.
It's a great app that students actually like to use, and will use without being prompted to do so. It is not a great learning tool, but simply a resource that can be used in addition to a lesson.

I really like the ways this website can used in classroom. Can show areas students may not have a chance to see otherwise.

Great tool because it expands the classroom.
This is an excellent tool taking the student out of their seat and transporting them to another location on our planet, and then showing them how their location relates to those places.

A Great Extension for Reading 1984 (and other Dystopic and/or Sci Fi literature)
As a teaching tool, Google Earth can be used in many ways: Literature Trips, Virtual Field Trips, Literary Cartography, etc. I have seen Science teachers use this site for tracking migration patterns of certain (tracked) animals and astronomy lessons, Mathematics teachers use it for calculating distances, Social Science teachers make lessons come to life with visual artifacts that their students might not otherwise experience. I like how pervasive the tool is in the sense that it can be, and often is, used by anyone in any field to introduce and/r extend their teaching or learning experience. This is a site that might eventually look to improve by making the ability for users to directly engage more obvious (i.e. encouraging teachers to have students interact by uploading pictures of their locations, or something similar).

Google Earth can bring literature to life!
Almost all students have heard of Google Earth, but using it to support literature has added so much more to the books we have read. Lit Trips on Google Earth can provide background knowledge for places mentioned in books. It can also be use for students to discover the setting of a story where they can gather information as the "hook" to a lesson. For struggling learners, there are plenty of pictures and videos provided by Google Earth visitors. Student can use the pictures or video to gather information. I find Google Earth on a desktop computer hard for the students to control. The ipad version is easier for them to navigate with out zooming in and out by accident, or going to street level unintentionally.
