I believe the most powerful aspect of Google Maps is allowing students to create their own custom maps.
I have found that students retain and enjoy geography more when they interact with it. Just merely studying a map on a piece of paper doesn't engage students. Google Map allows individuals to add text, an image, a link - even embed a video for any location on earth. The maps can also be shared - just as other Google applications - with others and groups of people can collaborate on a map.

The Navigation/Maps app to beat.
The go-to navigation/maps app. Whether you're a tourist searching for the nearest metro stop or simply looking for a short-cut through your local park, this is the most comprehensive, accurate app I've seen.
The street-view is a nice touch, helping with recognition.
It is also easy to switch between what modes of transportation are available. Interesting to see how much time you save/lose by taking the bus as opposed to driving, or vice versa.
