Good time-filler when computer lab activities are done early
Free rice has multiple choice style questions that are ad-supported but the money earned apparently goes to helping provide rice for under-nourished people. The students get feedback on how much rice they earned and how many people they fed. I haven't seen any inappropriate ads but you should know that it is ad-supported.

Great program to teach social responsibility while practicing/reviewing subjects such as math, vocabulary, grammar, and more!
What a great site for teaching social responsibility to your students! Students can help feed the world, while practicing their skills in basic math, art identification, and several foreign languages. In addition, students can work on chemistry symbols, anatomy, English vocabulary and grammar! As they practice they are rewarded with 10 grains of rice for the World Food Program which is part of the United Nations. Students enjoy seeing their bowls fill up with rice.

Great filler activity!
This website is a great filler resource. My students love earning rice for hungry children while they increase their vocabulary. The site self-regulates the difficultly of questions based on correct/incorrect responses.

An inspiring game that merges social responsibility with video-game fun.
Fantastic. This game is an innovative experience for students, effectively teaching about global hunger through a fun gaming experience. Social responsibility meets gaming.
Also of note - the multiple choice questions become more or less difficult depending on whether the chosen answers are correct.

Built-in motivation for vocab review
FreeRice is pretty simple. There are a number of topics (humanities, science, math, language, vocab, etc.) and a series of flashcard-style questions for students to work through.
As students answer questions correctly and move through the series of "cards," they earn charitable contributions of rice to individuals in need around the globe.
As can be expected, this World Food Programme site has some built-in motivation. Students are drawn to the concept of giving and are quick to get sucked into quizzing themselves on vocabulary, math, language, etc.

Great vocab review
Great website for students to review vocabulary words either for general knowledge, building, or SAT prep. You can start on a variety of levels (I think it goes up to 30) and as you progress, it will move you up or move you down if you're not doing well.

Addictive Vocabulary Builder... With a Heart
Free Rice is a great tool for students preparing to take any of the big standardized test (in fact, the developer created it to prepare his kiddo to pass the SAT). My students love the fact that it's easy to use and they especially love the fact that they can feel good about the social activism element to this game. I love that the app uses adaptive learning technology, offering more difficult words when students answer correctly and offering easier words when students answer incorrectly.
