Motivating student writing through professional artwork.
This is a website that I use with my students year after year, they really enjoy the ease of use, the awesome art, and sharing their work. I look forward to sharing Storybird with this year's 4th graders. It's free to use, but there is a cost if you want the children's work printed out in a professional-bound copy. The only thing teacher need to do, is set up an account and add your class list. I wish there was a free print feature.

Great site for stimulating story starters.
My overall opinion of storybird is that it works great for a limited purpose - helping stimulate ideas for writing. I'd like to see the option of creating original artwork to add to stories. I also think it would be helpful to have the ability to collaborate on a written work to allow students to co-create stories with each other, especially across geographic boundaries.

Great site for making your students writers.
I like this as a teaching tool because there are numerous packages of artwork to choose from. The students can write their own books and illustrate them as they go. There is an editing feature and you can have the students proofread and revise their work as needed. I do wish the students could print their stories but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. Also, the teacher needs to look at the student books before they are published since there are no editing features included in the program.

I love this product, and my students do too! They always ask to use it and actually want to write their own stories! Some even want to write stories in their free time!

Wonderful book maker
I am impressed by the artworks in this tool that students can use to create their storylines but I am not happy with the way the website administrator reviews the stories because they delete the stories if they think that the wording and or plot is not appropriate for their website to publish.

Neat way to get students to learn about child development by writing children's books!
Students do have to have an account which is fine as long as they have email and they keep up with their user name and password. The best thing is that you can start a book as the teacher and then invite students to work on the project and they can all access it from school or home. This is great in case a student is absent. The thing I didn't like about it was that students cannot add their own images. They have to use what is available on the site. Some of my students would have like to have uploaded their own illustrations. I can't wait to use this in other classes.

A great tool for creating dazzling digital stories!
I loved using this as a final teaching tool. I think you would have to still have a structured guide as to your expectations if you created an assignment for this, but the website allowed teachers to customize many aspects of the website and the sharing of students' work. This really helps visual learners and may even help with the brainstorming process of writing.
The only negative that I found was that students must use artwork created by Storybird artists and cannot upload their own.

digital storytelling tool using work by professional artists
Storybird is a digital storytelling tool. Students select an artist's work to feature in their writing. The tool is easy to use and the resulting e-books are very slick looking and can be shared online. Students can read and comment on their peer's work. Students were very engaged, but were sometimes frustrated by the limitations of the illustrations. It is very challenging for students to write a well-crafted story around the existing artwork. Also, some of the students were disappointed because they were able to see some of the paid features (such as different covers and page layouts), but could not use them.
