LESSON

What We See, What We Assume

How does our context shape the assumptions we make online?

When we view what others share online, we automatically make assumptions about the person who created that content. Sometimes those assumptions paint the creator in a positive light, while other assumptions may create negative views of that person. Teaching students to question these assumptions—and to think critically about creators' intent—can ultimately lead to more positive online experiences.

Objectives

  • Reflect on how limited information influences people to make assumptions about others
  • Consider the impact that assumptions have on how we interact online
  • Identify healthy approaches for assessing what we see online.
