LESSON

Slicing Up Media with P.I.E.

What are content creators trying to get us to do, learn, or feel?

Every video, advertisement, and social media post is created with a specific purpose in mind: to persuade you to buy something, inform you about a topic, or simply entertain you. This lesson introduces students to the PIE framework (persuade, inform, entertain) as a tool for understanding why content creators make what they make. Through analysis of both vintage commercials and modern-day media, students will learn to identify who media is made for and what messages the creators want to share. By recognizing these purposes, students develop the awareness to make thoughtful decisions about how media influences them.

Objectives

  • Identify the primary purpose of media using the PIE framework
  • Recognize how content creators target specific audiences with intentional messages
  • Analyze media to determine what creators want viewers to do, learn, or feel
