How I Use It
I found that being a premium member is most useful, because that enables me to assign/create custom spelling lists for students, track all my students' progress, grade them writing a sentence with each spelling word, and give them access to all the activities and games spellingcity has to offer (spelling, vocal & language arts practice). I give my students about 15min to work on spellingcity everyday. On Monday they take the pretest and play spelling games. On Tuesday they play vocabulary activities. On Wednesday they write a sentence using each spelling word, which is supposed to prove they understand the meaning of each word. On Thursday they take the post test. If they ace it, then they don't have to do any spelling on Friday. If they don't ace it, they need to keep studying and then re-take the test on Friday.
My Take
When I first learned about Spellingcity, I tried it and LOVED it, and have ever since. Why? Because it saved me a TON of time giving verbal spelling tests and grading everything by hand. Spelling city does almost all the spelling/vocabulary instruction itself! All I do is record the scores that it generates, and manually grade each sentence a student types using each spelling word from the week's list.
