How I Use It

I use Wordle in the classroom setting to help students get the main idea of a text after reading it if they have difficulty. I have also used it to gather the main idea of a text and preview the vocabulary before reading for groups who needed extra support (ELL, special needs, etc.). I have used this tool when teaching students digital etiquette. When we review our district's telecommunication policy, we put it into Wordle and can pull out the key vocabulary and dicuss the meanings of the words as well as see what words appear frequently, allowing students to identify the main idea of the text before reading. This is primarily with the readers who need more support, so that they have the background before reading the telecommunications policy as a whole. They are better able to understand the text when we have the visual representation first.

My Take

Wordle is a wordcreation tool that takes a text and arranges it into a color coded "word cloud" that differentiates the words based on frequency (more frequently used words are larger, less frequently used are smaller). These can then be printed out, embedded on webpages and used in the classroom setting. This is a way for them to see what are the words that are the most important in the text based on frequency and helps them determine the main idea or theme of a text by the words used consistently throughout the text. This tool is easy enough for students to use themselves (given that they know how to copy and paste a text, or can type in a text without difficulty). This is great for science texts and non-fiction texts as well- to pull out vocabulary and identify the main idea.
