How I Use It
This online website tool is a resource to use as a supplement for grammar and writing lessons. At the 6th grade level, this website works well as a practice or reinforcement tool. I feel it is not designed to be used as a self-paced teaching model for students. The "pro" of this website is the immediate feedback students receive after submitting their work. However, it does not replace teacher feedback! I plan to incorporate Quill in my 6th grade class in the fall, but will use it for specific purposes when students need to practice a particular skill.
Quill can be a helpful tool, if used wisely. Students practice grammar skills by writing or proofreading passages. I plan to use it with individual or small groups, while I am working with other students. The beauty of the website is the instant feedback. However, is it critical that the teacher conference with the student about his or her results on a lesson, to guide students toward the "next steps" and help the student understand why errors are wrong, and how to correct it next time. As with many resources, the teacher is a necessary component!
