How I Use It
I used Prezi as an exam review for A.P. U.S. Government & Politics. I divided students into groups and they were assigned objectives and/or learning outcomes from different units covered during the quarter. Students were allowed to use the templates or could create their own. They created presentations which had to include external links and video clips, as well as using the motion paths and zooming features of Prezi itself. Presentations were then posted to the class LMS (in this case Moodle) so all students could use them to study and review for the exam. Our technology integration specialist came in to my class the first day to give a short tutorial on using Prezi. Most students picked it up fairly quickly, but as I expected, some presentations were better than others. Some students had a difficult time filtering information and identifying what was most important. They had a tendency to put too many words in their Prezi which made the Prezi difficult to read. However, when they had the opportunity to make another Prezi they were much better the second time. I will use this exercise again in the future.
In terms of a classroom presentation, Prezi is a lot slicker looking than PowerPoint. At the very least, it can provide you with an updated look for presentations that you would typically give using PowerPoint. However you must be careful not to get too carried away with bells and whistles. There is a learning curve associated with Prezi. It takes practice to effectively use motion paths and zooming in so you don't make your audience motion sick. This is a great tool for visual learners however. Some very creative possibilities to explain difficult concepts.
