How I Use It

I tried having upper-elementary students use Pixton for a couple of projects (a story summary and a project for the class newsletter), but both times, most students were overwhelmed by all the options, and some students weren’t able to finish their comics in the time we had in the computer lab. This wasn’t their fault, but mine! I either needed to plan in significantly more time for them to learn Pixton’s interface, or I needed to go with a different comics creator. In then end, I switched to using MakeBeliefsComix.com, with much better results. I'd highly recommend that site for elementary or even middle school students!

My Take

There are a number of web-based comic creators, and Pixton seems to be a leader. Don't get me wrong - it's an incredibly powerful and versatile tool! I love the myriad sets and props. The strongest feature is the characters – they’re completely customizable in body structure, facial expression, and positions. I’ve seen some high school and college students use Pixton to create story summaries or history reports. But for most students under 16, that complexity makes it less than optimal for educational use. There are just too many rabbit trails for a young student to get lost on.
