How I Use It
I have used padlet as a means of review for units of study. I set up a padlet page for students to post comments and links for different topics. I have used it several times. The most recent was at the end of my unit on early civilizations in Mesopotamia. The students were asked to share what they had learned, questions they still had or just interesting links. Most of the students participated in a constructive way. The padlet page doesn't provide a way to get students to think on a higher level, though. And I had a student post something inappropriate. I did not allow the comment to be seen by others, but I was disappointed that students would not use it in a beneficial way. Most of my students posted questions about facts we didn't get to read or talk about in class. I was able to answer some of their questions in class. I could see from their Padlet responses what they were needing to be clarified. I added links to their questions. Students are able to answer each other in their questions. Many times students remember what their peers tell them more than what the teacher says. After using Padlet, my students had a greater understanding of Mesopotamian culture and history. They have retained that knowledge and are applying it in our comparison with Ancient Egypt.
Padlet allows students to answer a question on a virtual discussion board. Students can respond in meaningful ways or they may need some prodding. My sixth grade students are very motivated by the opportunity to interact with each other. Padlet provides this opportunity. My students post questions about things they need clarifying. I am able to answer their questions, add links to their comments, and aid in their learning. However, the students tend to give silly answers and avoid answering the questions posed at times. Students can post on padlet even if they don't sign up. However, there is no real way to track who has posted if they don't log in.I chose Padlet above all similar products because of the ease of signing up and getting kids on the website. It is very easy to get started.
