How I Use It
I used Free Rice in a Geography class where students were reviewing names of countries on a map. I utilized the review game as a supplementary review for the students on their own time, but I also used it in a gamification model. I started a private group for my students, so I could identify which subjects for them to participate in, and it also makes a leaderboard to show who is earning the most rice. This creates a fun atmosphere and encourages friendly rivalry to earn the most rice. My students identified that by playing this game, they were earning needed food for those in need in the world, which also sparked a desire for my students to make a difference in the world.
My overall take is that although it is a bit clunky and can be somewhat difficult to get a class group setup for your students, I highly recommend it. I found that the take away message from students was not only reviewing content, but that they have a connection to those in need throughout the world and that they can literally help others through the United Nations World Food Programme.
