How I Use It
I am not a teacher, but I am a student. My English teacher seems to love this platform and it works great when you have the needed file type for video uploads.
Honestly it really kinda sucks. I'm writing this review right now only so teachers out there can hear feedback from a student on how hard it is to use. I just spent the past 4 hours trying to get a simple 5-minute speech onto this platform. It has a 250gb upload limit so almost all of my classmates have to upload their speeches in two parts. Mine, however, is still too large in two parts and it would make my teacher upset if she had to watch four different parts of one speech (and i'm using a free video editing software, Blender, that takes very long to process edited clips). Not only that, but Flipgrid only takes three file types: .mov .mp4 .webm. I don't have a webcam, so that rules one of those out. I don't even know what .mov is so that rules that out. FInally, we have mp4, but Blender can't output mp4 files. So here I am, no way to upload my video to this stupid website, and 45 minutes left to submit the assignment. So I say, "You know what? Screw it". I go to google drive, upload both videos, and it takes a little over 15 minutes.
The moral of my story? Don't use Flipgrid. It doesn't keep students logged in, there's no way for a student to join a class group without having to use a special link every single time they log on, it isn't versatile in terms of video formatting, and it almost made me late for my project deadline. So please, save your students the 4 hour journey to upload a simple video file and just use something easier like google drive.
=EDIT= I'm seeing a lot of teachers saying this platform was really easy to use for them. You should try asking your student how the platform is working for them and if they are having any problems, as I want to make sure i'm not an outlier hating on a great platform.
